Adding referees
How to nominate referees for your reference check.
After you consent, you can nominate up to ten referees. For each referee you need to provide:
- Reference type — professional, academic or personal
- Full name
- Work email (a work email lets us verify your referee; a personal address can only be recorded as unverified)
- Employer
- Their job title
- Your job title there
- Employment dates (start and end — month and year)
- Relationship
Reference type changes the rest of the form
Pick the reference type first: it decides which of the other fields you are asked for, what they are called, and which of our five checks run on that referee.
- Professional reference — the fields above, as listed.
- Academic reference — Institution rather than Employer, What you studied there rather than your job title, and Dates of study rather than employment dates.
- Personal reference — just Email (a personal address is the honest answer here, so there is no work-email nudge), Where they work, and their job title. You are not asked for a job title of your own or for dates, because there is no shared employment to claim.
Relationship is a short list, and the type decides which list you see: line manager, manager, HR, colleague, client or other for a professional reference; tutor or other for an academic one; friend or acquaintance, or other, for a personal one. Changing the type after you have picked a relationship clears the relationship, because the new type may not offer it.
See Reference types for what each type is checked on.
How it works
Each referee is saved as you go — you can return to the same link and continue. Once you have entered all your referees, confirm the list and we will invite them.
If the employer entered the referees
If the employer entered the referees, you will see them listed. Depending on the permission the employer set, you can edit details, replace them, or add more referees. If the employer chose View only, you can confirm the list or report a referee who is not the right person.
