Entering referees yourself

How to provide referee details when raising a check.

When you raise a check, you can choose to enter the referees yourself instead of leaving it to the candidate.

How it works

Select I'll enter them when raising the check. For each referee, you'll need:

  • Full name
  • Work email
  • Company
  • Their job title
  • Reference type — professional, academic or personal
  • Relationship to the candidate

Reference type decides which of the five checks we run on that referee, and it changes the relationships on offer: a professional reference lists line manager, manager, HR, colleague, client and other; an academic one lists tutor and other; a personal one lists friend or acquaintance, and other. See Reference types.

The candidate still needs to consent before any referee is contacted. Entering referees yourself does not skip the consent step.

What the candidate can do

You can control how much the candidate can change:

View onlySee the referees, consent or decline. Cannot change, replace or add. If they say a referee isn't the right person, we record the dispute and tell you.
Edit or replaceEdit details or replace a referee.
Edit, replace or addEdit, replace or add referees up to the required number.

The default is Edit or replace.
